Choosing a mobility scooter usually comes down to one key question: where will you be using it most? UK mobility scooters fall into two legal classes, and knowing the difference makes the decision much easier.

Class 2 scooters are designed for pavement use. They're limited to 4mph, don't require registration with the DVLA, and no driving licence is needed. These are typically smaller, lighter, and easier to transport — a good fit if most of your journeys are local: shops, appointments, visiting family.

Class 3 scooters are road-legal and can travel up to 8mph. They're built for longer distances and can be used on the road when needed (for example, where there's no pavement). Class 3 scooters must be registered with the DVLA — this registration is free, and the scooter is automatically exempt from road tax. No driving licence is required for either class.

Which one is right for you?

• Mostly shopping, local trips, indoor/outdoor pavement use → Class 2
• Longer distances, rural routes, occasional road use → Class 3
